Medical billers do not work from home (or at least the majority do not). IF you can find a legitimate company that is hiring, they pay $1-$3 an hour more than minimum wage if you don’t have experience and you have to go show up.

Most doctors & clinics either do it in office, or outsource to huge billing companies–and most of them have gone to India, Bangladesh or Eastern Europe.

    Sorry.

To make good money at home in medical billing you must do electronic claims submissions. There were tons of scams relating to this years ago. However, the idea is to get training through a school that does not sell or resell billing software. There is also an investment when you get out of school. Many medical billing software packages, the good ones, are expensive upwards of about $1,000. Training is relatively short to do billing. It is harder than say Medical Transcription to locate billing clients. You really have to sell a doctor on the idea. However, when you do sell your services and land a client it is VERY lucrative. The average doctor’s office brings in about a million dollars a year. An at home medical biller charges, depending on the services offered (do you do coding, do you run and send him reports, etc….), can charge between 6-14% of what they bring in to the doctor. You do the math, the pay is extremely good.

I have a friend, who got tired of running her MT service and decided to do billing. She bought the Medisoft Patient Accounting software and some training materials for about $1,000. She trained herself (not recommended), and sent out flyers to land a client. On her first mailing (NOT typical) she landed two clients. With just two clients, she brings in about $7500 a month working about 4 hours a day on her laptop. She feels the work is easy, nearly mind numbing. Now, having said this, I think it’s only fair to strongly warn you that her experience is the exception to the rule. There have been people who have gone through medical billing programs and can’t get the money together for the software they need to bill at home, lack the forte to sell the service to doctors, and/or simply cannot muster interest from the medical community in their area for it.

A more sure fire career choice is medical transcription. You can work at home, there are many jobs available, and once you complete training you don’t have to invest $1,000s of more dollars to get started.
