Medical Transcription/Coding-Billing training and ?’s?

A little background. I have a BS degree in Health Service management and an AS degree in Dental Hygiene. I am currently working full-time as an office manager in a non-medical related office.

My husband and I are hoping to start a family soon (been trying but going to get assistance now) and I would love to stay at home when the time comes. I have looked into medical transcription and/or medical billing/coding as options. Our community college offers programs for both of these and some of the requirements I have met already.

So my questions…
Do you work in either of these professions and if so what can you tell me about them?
Do you work from home…if so how did you make that happen?
Did you contact local medical facilities to let them know you were available to work from home or work in their office?
About what does this position pay?
Anything else I need to know?

I would love something that I am able to be at home doing and that would use my medical background. I don’t want to waste more money on classes and training if this isn’t a good field to go into. I plan on speaking with the admissions dept and the small business planning dept at the college to find out more information.

Thanks for the help!

My background is very similar to yours and I did medical transcription at home while my son was growing up. There is a ton of good info on the website below, including certification details (you may not need training) and work flow demo and jobs.
