How do you get a job at a hospital doing administrative or billing and coding work without experience?
December 4th, 2009 by admin
I want to take a course in medical billing and coding and I researched the jobs advertised, no one is hiring anyone without 2 years experience. I don’t want to was time and money.
I have a bachelor’s, could I just try for unit secretary jobs or do I need training for that too? I don’t know what to do.

i would go to a hospital and inquire. perhaps more than one hospital, as well
You’re correct in that most medical coders need a couple of years experience doing coding tasks plus certification(s) in the field and preferably completion of an accredited program to possibly get a job as a coder. With billing, a lot of companies are outsourcing to Asia/Inda leaving the jobs more scarce.
Regarding unit secretary (or ‘hospital unit coordinator’), my friend’s sister had taken that course and said that it can be quite stressful with having to deal with various levels of staff and needing to be able to multi-task.
For general information about health unit coordinators: http://www.nahuc.org (I don’t personally know anything about the organization.)
For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can type into search ’secretaries and administrative assistants’ or whatever other career that piques one’s interest.
Regardless of which course one decides on taking, please forgo those private $$ tech schools and instead opt for the county vo-tech school, community college or major university.
