Hospitals & clinics in a metropolis area may prefer someone with experience but will train depending on the actual job. You will receive your certificate thru their ongoing training. So, you do not HAVE to have a certificate prior.
Medical Biller handles secondary billing by electronic & paper filing with carriers (Major Medical carriers – - like Medicare, Medicaid, DakotaCare, Blue Cross, etc..) Secondary billing (establishment automatically sent to the Primary carrier, Medical Biller handles problems occurred from primary and handles remainder of bill with their secondary insurance or carrier). Hospital/clinic will train for job and certificate. They have additional interest in you if you have an understanding of Medicare & Medicaid carriers more so than the other carriers.
Medical CODER – - you REALLY need to know how to utilize the CPT (procedure code) and the DX (diagnosis code) books. They expect you to find the codes so the Doctor and/or nurse does not have to. If you can efficiently find the exact codes needed using these books, they will have you take a test for a certificate.
Medical Data Entry – - Need to code quickly & accurately into the proper fields that the coder provided for you. Again, if you meet these qualifications, a test for a certification can be done at that establishment, also.
These institutions look closely at how fast you can code and/or data entry (have numbers/facts included in your resume). Stability is a key to closer review: How long you lived at an address or do you move around a lot and length of time at prior jobs. Medical knowledge is always a plus – - i.e
know lot of medical terminology regarding cancer or heart because many situations with my husband’s relatives or I’m the one who handles all the medical instructions & billing for my mom & husband’s mom for the past 10 years.
I used lot of the basic terminology in this field – - use it in your resume and during an interview proves you have knowledge on the topic. Stability in address & prior jobs. Dependable & not late nor many sick days. Fast & accurate fingers. Clean & neat appearance, medical knowledge, ability to prioritize assignments according to their urgency, willingness to learn everything they have to offer to better assist you in you job.
